The ATM Guard...

Tuesday morning was a busy and very rushed day from the start. At about 8am the team bus pulled into the Shell gas station to purchase ice and then travel to the ministry site. I sat in the front seat of the van impatiently waiting for the driver to load the ice cooler, wanting to depart before the traffic became worse. Finally, we were ready to leave but right as the van was pulling away, I saw a thought provoking site...

A white security van stopped in front of the gas station and five armed guards jumped out to surround the ATM. Four guards took their positions around the ATM as one entered and began collecting the money. All were very intent, standing with guns ready to shoot. However, after a few seconds, the guard in front lowered his gun and began to play with his scope. He was totally distracted and not doing his job. “How terrible,” I thought, “what if someone were waiting for the opportune moment to rob the ATM! They could attack right now.” In reality, the guard’s even brief distraction could have led to an absolute disaster.

So then, what’s such the thought provoker? We are just like the man standing in front of the ATM. If we lower our guard and allow things to distract us in life away from God, we are vulnerable. We are at greater risk for attack from the enemy and are not appropriately prepared for battles that will eminently come our way. Grow in the Lord, remain in his word and in relation with him, and never for a moment drop your guard.
