Ministry on the way to minister

(shoe shiners in Antigua, Guatemala)

After our entry visas were revoked to another Central American country, our Convoy of Hope intern team (and myself, as the team leader) had to quickly make alternate travel plans. Thus, we planned for a three day spiritual retreat in Antigua, Guatemala to be followed by two weeks of ministry in El Salvador. Antigua was more of an interlude between ministry in the Dominican Republic and El Salvador... or so I thought. In the 72 hours spent in Antigua God showed me more than on any other part of the trip.

Ministry on the way to minister... It was about midday and having some free time I plopped myself down on a quiet bench to chat with God. No sooner than I had sat down, a young boy walked over and seated himself next to me. After a moment of silence, he introduced himself as Alfred and began to tell me about his life. His eyes were red and tired and he appeared to be a shoe shiner in the city square. After a bit, I was able to ask him if he knew about Jesus and had a personal relationship with Him. Alfred replied that he did know the Lord but still, I sensed such a lonliness. My heart sank when I realized that I had to leave to meet the group. I got up from the bench with such a pull in my spirit.

I arrived at the fountain square where the group was meeting and joined them for the devotional. Once again, no sooner had I sat down than a man walked over and began to talk to the group. Oscar was his name and in very clear English, he began to ask us for money. He said he spoke a couple of different languages and was quite educated but was homeless and hungry. Immediately, one of the group members jumped up and offered to take Oscar to get dinner. Buying Oscar dinner provided an opportunity for prayer and taking him to church. However, when we left Oscar, my spirit once again felt heavy.

Then, the Lord began to pour into me. The message for the day was clear... Antigua was "supposed" to be a short stop before ministry in El Salvador but God didn't want me to miss the ministry opportunity sitting next to me. God has such a compassionate, loving heart for all people. He gave his everything for mankind and desires for me to have that same heart. No matter how busy or where I am, God puts real opportunity in front of me on a daily basis! Simply stated... Don't miss the opportunity for ministry on your way to minister.
